CHIVAS REGAL GOES UNDEFEATED |
When you know... it's your year, nothing will get in your way - not Mongolian hordes, not hungry Tigresses. This was indeed the year of Chivas Regal Scotland who conquered every team in their path and won the WEPA Cup for the first time since Chivas entered the world of elephant polo in 1997. Going into the final, the Chivas team was understandably nervous meeting the Tigresses USA who had clawed their way through the closely matched B League to beat National Parks, the winningest team in WEPA history, and become the first all-women's team to reach the WEPA Cup finals. With WEPA veterans Peter Prentice, James Manclark and Raj Kalaan aided and supported by Geoffrey Dobbs and Dominic Moynahan from Sri Lanka, the Chivas team combined their depth of individual skill with admirable team spirit and cooperation. The final was an intensely exciting game with Chivas Regal winning in the end by one goal (final score 5-4), finishing the tournament undefeated.

MONGOLIANS CAPTURE AMATEUR CUP
From the far north they came, over steppes, desert and mountains to capture the Chivas Regal Amateur Quaich Cup, as well as the hearts of their fellow polo players. With Solonga leading the offense, the Mongolian Nomads decisively shut down the rest of the amateur teams in the tournament, winning the Quaich Cup final against the Aussies, Tickle and the Ivories by a score of 2-0. The Tickles played a remarkable series of games in order to reach the Quaich Cup finals, this being their first tournament, and walked away not only as runners-up in the Amateur competition, but with the highly coveted "Best Dressed" award

NATIONAL PARKS SAVES FACE AND WINS THIRD PLACE
After being bumped out of the finals by a serious team of Tigresses, the National Parks team had their work cut out for them in meeting the Ham Polo Club in the 3rd/4th Playoff. Ham had come within a hair of beating Chivas Regal in the Semi-Final and posed a serious threat to relegating the Parks to fourth place for the second year in a row. The Parks team, captained by the venerable Ram Prit Yadav, was playing with a 4 handicap against Ham's 2 handicap and they definitely had their work cut out for them against Jim Edwards and his aces, Bhim Tharu, Chris and Clare Mathias and Everen (Everest) Brown. It was a close, exciting game, and the Parks redeemed themselves and their sterling reputation by winning 8-7 in the end.
CRESTA POONANHIS TRIUMPH IN AN UNCONVENTIONAL BATTLE FOR EIGHTH PLACE:-
In certainly the most unusual game of the tournament, the Cresta Poonanhis once again secured their preferred berth in the cellar by losing to the Tiger Tops Tuskers in a wild game complete with flying hats, mahout takeovers, questionable substitutions and general insanity. Kristjan Edwards, the Tuskers' captain, still reeling from being defeated by Hattie Broadhead and the Tigresses, tried his best to secure 8th place as he had in 1999, but the Poonanhis would have none of it. Cresta Captain Simon Hayward suspended his infamous hooking practices for one game and pulled out all stops in order to guarantee his team the bottom slot for the second year running.
